The Isles of Scilly is known for its turquoise, glistening waters and white-sand beaches that are quieter and (dare we say it) more charming than those that can be found on the mainland.
Because of this, the islands are often thought of as an ideal place to visit if you want to slow down from your usual activities, prioritise your wellbeing, and take some time for yourself and your loved ones.
But relaxing on the Isles of Scilly’s beaches is not the only way in which to unwind and recharge. In fact, if a wellness retreat is just the kind of thing you’re after, there are plenty of things you can do whether you are visiting the Isles of Scilly for a day trip or for a little while longer…
Swimming in the Isles of Scilly’s wild waters
Whether it be first thing in the morning for a cold water dip to feel fresh and invigorated (read our cold water therapy blog post for more details on the benefits of a chilled dip) or an evening swim to end the day by connecting with nature – wild swimming hosts a myriad of health benefits such as boosting your immune system, improving heart health, and reducing symptoms of anxiety.
Enjoying beach yoga on an island of your choice
As part of Adventure Scilly’s bespoke offering, you can enjoy morning meditations or restorative yoga sessions on the beach. Alternatively, you can use their RIB service to moor up onto a secluded beach for a snorkel and a paddle. Adventure Scilly offers a range of ways to explore the waters.
Experience alfresco dining in a scenic location
On the Isles of Scilly, you are spoilt for choice for alfresco dining beside the sea, which is a wonderful way to enjoy the scenery, unwind and fuel up for your day. Dibble and Grub is a delightful spot on Porthcresssa beach for brunch, or why not try Seven Stones Inn or Karma St Martin’s on St Martin’s for beachside dining. On St Mary’s there are independent delis and cafes who have a range of takeaway options available which is perfect for you to take with you to the beach for a picnic by the water… a very quintessentially island thing to do.
Explore the turquoise waters by kayak or stand-up paddle board
Each of the islands on the Isles of Scilly offer kayaks and SUPs that can be hired by the hour, day, or week, for you to be able to paddle at your own pace and on your own schedule. Sit back and relax in a kayak and gently meander your way through the soft lulls of the ocean, looking out for jellyfish and seals.
Cycle your way around St Mary’s
Another brilliant thing to do, if prioritising wellbeing is on your list, is discovering the island of St Mary’s by pedal power. Cycling is a brilliant way to boost your mental health and brain power, yet it can also help you to discover more of the island. Cycle along the quiet and idyllic coast paths, stopping at a secluded beach for a pause or a picnic. Cycle around St Mary’s with St Mary’s Bike Hire or hire a bike on Tresco to see more of this off-island.
Discover art inspired by the wildlife and natural beauty of the islands
Immersing ourselves in art, whether it be stopping on a beach to paint the scenery in front of us, or visiting one of the islands’ many galleries, is a fantastic way to soothe the mind and feel calm. On the Isles of Scilly you are spoilt for choice with galleries and studios, where often you can meet the artist and see them creating their pieces as you pop by. From paintings of whales on wood to illustrations of seals, much of the art on the Isles of Scilly is inspired by the islands themselves.
These are just a few of the things you can do on the Isles of Scilly to prioritise your wellbeing, feel calmer, and enjoy the peacefulness of island life to its fullest.
